The second child of ten children to the late Wilbert and Mildred Harris, Betty was born and raise in Vacherie, La. She accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized on Easter Sunday in 1959 by the late Pastor Arthur Jones. She was married to Wilmer Washington in 1963, and to this union three children were born: Monica, Tharnell, and Shannon. She became a single parent and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit she returned to school to give her children a better future. Betty received her GED in 1968 and later went on to complete college where she received her State License for LPN in 1970. She moved to Lutcher, La. in 1969, where she married the late Fred Perkins, Jr. They were blessed with two daughters: Shawn P. Bourgeois and April P. Washington. After moving to Lutcher she joined Israelite Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Louis Johnson and then under Kevin B. Fredrick where she was called to the Deaconess Ministry. In 2004, she returned to her home church, First Baptist, where she continued to work with the Deaconess Ministry. She was recently elected Chairlady of the Deaconess Ministry in 2009.
